Her Spin on Things: Music as a Bridge for Connection

There’s a language that speaks louder than words, that reaches beyond explanations, and connects hearts instantly. For me, that language is music—and I discovered its full power when I joined Her Spin on Things.

What an outstanding idea: women coming together in a comfortable, welcoming space, sharing stories, moments and songs. This musical haven was created by Juana, La Foxy Fuzz, who opened her home to us, giving us a new chance to meet like-minded women. She inspired us to connect through music and, through the Femme Forward Collective, allowed some of us to take the decks for the first time in public - an experience that has been nerve-wracking and exhilarating for each of us as our first time.

At every gathering, we share our stories—not only with words but through the soundtracks of our daily lives. In doing so, we become each other’s audience, forging connections that feel like an extended family. Many of the women I have met through this community are now close to my heart and to my ears, each bringing a sound that has enriched my life in ways I could never have anticipated.

Sharing music in this space allowed us to transmit more than just melodies and lyrics. It carries memories, emotion, and glimpses of our histories and past experiences. Music becomes a language of empathy, a bridge linking our individual worlds. It's a place where we lift each other and also open new spaces together.

Through Her Spin on Things, we learn about our victories beyond the space. We discover passions, explore new sounds, and grow closer through shared musical experiences. While we all have our unique backgrounds, tastes and stories, those differences enrich not only our musical knowledge but also our lives, broadening how we perceive our realities. Together, we build a community rooted in growth and empowerment.

Sometimes music can act as a time machine, a dictionary, or a history book. I remember a moment with cuecas, a traditional Chilean music genre and dance. That word carries a completely different meaning in Brazil. That difference became a source of laughter, but at the same time, a learning experience. Even in these playful moments, the music itself creates a connection.

Through Her Spin on Things, we see that music is more than just sound. It is a way to understand, feel and celebrate each other—to celebrate differences, find common ground, build connections, support each other, and carry these lessons into the world.

Music is our teacher, our bridge, and our invitation: to keep listening, and to keep learning from one another.
